From the Executive Summary:
Music schools, to be relevant to the 21st century, need to be reimagined not as bastions of music (with the walled-off insularity that the metaphor suggests) or as conservatories in the strict sense, but as cradles for the arts, as gateways between Universities and their communities, as full partners in the artistic reflection on the world that helps humanity better understand itself. The Faculty of Music is committed to being a leading North American comprehensive music school that combines knowledge creation and scholarship, musical performance, composition, and music education. In our five-year plan (Modulations: Stepping UP in Music), we seek to champion student-centred education, to lay the foundation for a lively interdisciplinary arts engagement on campus and throughout our region, to further the University’s engagement in civic life, and to foster multicultural and global awareness. Our goals, summarized in this Executive Summary, build on the current strengths of the Faculty but also challenge us to aim higher in many key areas. Our Stepping UP process is an iterative one, and we expect to develop and refine the plan in each of its five years.
