General Announcement to Faculty & Staff from June 20, 2007

Good afternoon,

I am pleased to announce that the wireless network for the Edward Johnson Building is now up and running.

If you have a laptop that has a wireless (wifi) card, then you should be able to see the network – called UTORwin. Our wireless network is a part of the larger University of Toronto Campus Wireless Network (UTORcwn). We have 16 wireless access points (WAPs) installed throughout the building. While we may not have coverage in every area of the building, we now have coverage for most of it.

I will be putting together some more information about our wireless network and posting it on our website in the coming days. It will outline the location of our 16 wireless access points. For now, please feel free to try out your wireless connection with your laptop and let it search for the wireless signal. I have already heard from a number of people that they have seen and logged into the UTORwin.

In order to use the wireless internet network, you will need to authenticate (or sign-in) to the network. You will need to provide your UTORid and password. Some of you have already used your UTORid when you check your UofT e-mail via the “my.utoronto.ca” website.

In order to authenticate to the network, you will need to use your web browser and go to the following website: http://login.wireless.utoronto.ca. You will then be asked to provide your UTORid and password, then click the “login” button. Once you have done that, you will be shown a webpage that indicates that you are logged in to the UTORcwn (campus wireless network). You may then start browsing the web or use other applications that require an internet connection.

For general information about the wireless network, please visit the following website: http://wireless.utoronto.ca/. If you need to configure your wireless network card, you can find some instructions on this webpage: http://www.utoronto.ca/ic/utordist/wireless/index.html. If you have questions about how to connect to the network, please feel free to contact me and I’d be happy to help you with the setup.

I’d like to thank Fred Perruzza and Joe Lesniak as well as the staff at Computer and Networking Services for their help in bringing our wireless network to life.

Take care and all the best,

Kevin.
