DMA candidate Kevin Lau wins 2010 Karen Kieser Prize
November 25, 2010 - The University of Toronto is pleased to announce the 2010 Karen Kieser Prize in Canadian Music will be awarded to Kevin Lau for his work, Starsail for cello and piano. Kevin is in the fourth year of the Doctor of Musical Arts degree program at the University of Toronto, where he also completed Bachelor and Master of Music degrees.

its Toronto premiere on Friday, December 3, 2010 in MacMillan Theatre.

Kevin Lau is active as a composer of contemporary classical music. His first complete composition, Empire of Paradise
(1999), was arranged and performed by the Albertan drum corps
Allegiance Elite throughout Canada and the United States. Since then, he
has had music commissioned and performed by the Hamilton Philharmonic
Orchestra, the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra, the University of Calgary
Brass Choir, the Canadian Composers' Quartet, the Esprit Orchestra, the
Georgian Bay Symphony, the Cecilia String Quartet, the Toronto Symphony
Youth Orchestra, the Toronto Philharmonia, the Onnanoko Drumming

The Karen Kieser Prize is awarded each year to a graduate student in composition whose work is judged by a blue-ribbon jury as especially promising. Karen Kieser was a distinguished triple-graduate of the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto and a former Head of Music at CBC Radio. Friends and colleagues endowed The Karen Kieser Prize in Canadian Music upon her death in 2002 as a tribute to her life, her work and her passionate devotion to the cause of Canadian music and musicians.
