Lecture by Paul Hoffert, C.M.
Louis Applebaum Distinguished Visitor in Film Composition

Title: "McLuhan, Media, & Music: Media Theory for Performers and Composers"

Paul Hoffert, Digital Media Professor at York University and well-known composer and performer, uncovers important links between Marshall Mcluhan's media theories and the current work environment for music performers and composers. It turns out that the Medium IS the Message and that stages, concert halls, sound reinforcement, recording studios, television, films, video games, iPads, mobile phones, as well as composing and notation software are all media that impact the messages and professional activities of  musicians today.

Professor Hoffert is Chair of the Screen Composers Guild of Canada, former Chair of the Ontario Arts Council, and a recipient of many awards for his film and orchestral compositions as well as the founder of the rock band Lighthouse, which has received four Juno Awards as best artist. Hoffert was inducted into the Canadian Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and received the Order of Canada for his contributions to music and media in 2004.
