The 2013 edition of the University of Toronto New Music Festival is the most ambitious undertaking to date. Headlining the Festival is the acclaimed American composer and electric guitarist Steven Mackey whose work blends classical and pop music. Commemorating the 10th anniversary of Luciano Berio’s passing, the Festival will present the complete Sequenze by the great Italian composer - the first time it is done in Canada. From the creative team that produced the critically acclaimed Rob Ford, the Opera comes Antigone - opera scenes featuring music by student composers with a libretto penned by Michael Patrick Albano adapted from Sophocle's classic. With a week-long lineup of concerts, lectures, master classes and workshops, including performances by U of T faculty, students and such formidable artists as Nexus percussion ensemble, 2X10 piano duo and the deVah String Quartet, the Festival will open a new year of exemplary modern music-making in Toronto.
