David Beach is Professor emeritus of Music Theory and was Dean of the Faculty of Music from 1996 to 2004. Before coming to the University of Toronto, Professor Beach taught at Yale University, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, and at the Eastman School of Music, where for several years he served as Chair of the Department of Music Theory, and for four years as Dean of Graduate Studies of the University of Rochester. His primary research area is Schenkerian theory-analysis, and his secondary areas are history of music theory (particularly the 18th century) and theories of pitch organization in 20th century music. He is co-translator of Kirnberger's Art of Strict Musical Composition, has edited a collection of essays on Schenkerian Theory, and with others a collection of essays reflecting the wide spectrum of research characteristic of the field of music theory in the 1990s.  His monograph, Aspects of Unity in J.S. Bach's Partitas and Suites was published by the University of Rochester Press in 2005, and his most recent book, Practical Introduction in Schenkerian Analysis was completed in 2009. He is also the author of over 30 articles in refereed journals.
