Associate Professor Elizabeth Gould joined the Faculty of Music in 2005, and teaches philosophically-based courses in music education. Previously, she served on the music faculties of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Boise State University. Her research interests include gender and sexuality in the context of feminisms and queer theory. In addition to serving as lead editor for the book, Exploring Social Justice: How Music Education Might Matter (Canadian Music Educators' Association/L'Association canadienne des musiciens éducateurs, 2009), Gould has published chapters in the books, Music Education for Changing Times: Guiding Visions for Practice (Dordrect, 2009), and Questioning the Music Education Paradigm (Canadian Music Educators' Association/L'Association canadienne des musiciens éducateurs, 2004), as well as articles in a variety of journals, including Philosophy of Music Education Review, Music Education Research, Women and Music: A Journal of Gender and Culture, College Music Symposium, Educational Philosophy and Theory, and the Brazilian journal, labrys: études féministes estudos feministas. She has served in leadership roles with professional organizations such as Gender Research in Music Education-International and the International Society for Philosophy of Music Education, and organized the conferences, musica ficta: A Conference on Engagements and Exclusions in Music, Education, and the Arts (2008), and Feminist Theory and Music 6: Confluence and Divide (2001). A featured curator for Queer Americana, the theme week posted August 8-12, 2011 on in media res: a media commons project, Gould is currently developing the project, Subjects By Desire: ‘A’ Life to Music.
