Joelle Morton Joëlle Morton, Gamba Ensemble

Joëlle Morton
is a widely sought performer and teacher North America, Europe and Brazil, specializing in a variety of period instruments, including Renaissance and Baroque violas da gamba, violoni and double basses. Active primarily as a soloist and chamber musician, Joëlle directs the Scaramella chamber music series in Toronto and is a founding member of the NYC-based ensemble Sympatica, and has recently made appearances with Tafelmusik, the Toronto Symphony, the New York Collegium, les Voix Humaines, I Furiosi, La Monica, Parthenia—A Consort of Viols, the Catacoustic Consort, Artek, Philomel, Concert Royal, Brandywine Baroque, Ensemble Soleil, Los Angeles Baroque, Musica Angelica and the Musicians in Ordinary. In addition to a large studio of private students, Joëlle teaches the viola da gamba consort at the University of Toronto and is the official Viol Consultant for the Hart House collection of antique viols. As well, Joëlle is much in demand as a musicologist and clinician, presenting lecture/demos on the history and development of string instruments. She is the author of a number of scholarly articles and she has published several editions of music for lyra viol. She is the Editor for the International Society of Bassists scholarly electronic journal for historical bass research (www.ojbr.com) and her personal website (www.greatbassviol.com) serves as an important international resource to those interested in researching large bowed bass instruments.
