Mary Enid Hains, Historical Performance
Mary Enid Haines is recognized as a leading interpreter of baroque and classical song in recital, oratorio and opera. She has made solo appearances with ensembles in Europe, New Zealand, the USA and Canada including the Aradia Ensemble, the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Choir, Musick Fyne, the Kitchener Renaissance Singers, and the Oshawa and Windsor Symphonies.
Ms. Haines has performed in the Vancouver Early Music Festival, the New Zealand Chamber Music Festival, the Festival de Musique Ancienne in Quebec City, Musique Royale, Hornby Island Festival, Quinte Summer Music, Stratford Summer Music and the Saugeen Bach Festival, among others. Ms. Haines is heard regularly on CBC Radio and has recorded for ebs Germany, IBS Canada and Naxos.
Ms. Haines was the Director of the Early Music Ensembles, and on the voice faculty at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto until 2004, when she accepted a position at the University of Ottawa’s Department of Music. She continues to teach for the University of Toronto’s School of Graduate Studies.
As well as having an active performing career, soprano Mary Enid Haines is an acclaimed voice teacher and specialist in the field of voice rehabilitation. Since 1999 Ms. Haines has worked as the Singing Voice Specialist at the Voice Disorders Clinic at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto. She has lectured on the subject of vocal pedagogy for the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music, and the University of Ottawa’s Speech Language Pathology Department.
A graduate of the University of Toronto (Mus Bach, Mmus) and the Royal Conservatory of Music (ARCT), Mary Enid Haines also holds certificates from the London Early Music Centre and the National Center for Voice and Speech (Vocology). She has had extensive training with the renowned singing teacher, Mr. Oren Brown, author of
Discover Your Voice: How to Develop Healthy Voice Habits. In 2003 Ms. Haines became a certified Level A Pilates Mat Instructor at the Ottawa Pilates Centre, a skill which she incorporates in her voice studio.
