Kelsley holds a Bachelor of Music from McGill University and completed his Graduate studies at the Manhattan School of Music. While in New York he studied privately with Steve Turre and studied arranging and orchestration with Richard DeRosa. Shortly after leaving New York he became the trombonist for Maynard Fergusonʼs Big Bop Noveau and spent time touring the United States, Germany, Switzerland and England. His work with Ballet Jazz de Montrealʼs production of Tristan and Iseult took him on a tour of Italy which culminated in three days of performances at The Umbria Jazz Festival. Kelsley has performed with Maria Schneider, Michel LeGrand, Nicholas Payton, Sophie Milman, Ranee Lee, Karen Young and Jackie Richardson. He toured with ForeverSwing, and took part in the Toronto production of Ainʼt Misbehavinʼ. He has played on several movie soundtracks including Cirque de Soleil-Alegria and Les Triplettes De Belleville which was nominated for two Academy Awards. Kelsley has been twice nominated for trombonist of the year by the National Jazz Awards. He co-leads the Jefferson Grant Quintet with saxophonist Kelly Jefferson. The ensemble has performed across Canada, won an Opus Award for their first recording and was nominated Acoustic Ensemble of theYear at the 2003 National Jazz Awards. Kelsley has served as a faculty member at McGill University and has given Master Classes and clinics at Universities across Canada. He is currently teaching at Humber College and University of Toronto.
