NATHALIE PAULIN, Soprano

A native of New Brunswick, Canada, soprano Nathalie Paulin joined the Voice Studies Faculty at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music in 2009.  In addition to her studio of voice students at U of T, she teaches master class courses in French Mélodie, drawing on her tremendous recital experience in this repertoire, and her privileged place in the direct teaching line from Pierre Bernac to her principal voice teacher, Gaston Germain. Nathalie’s formal studies include B.Mus. and M.Mus. degrees from l'Université de Montréal, and post-graduate studies with Dalton Baldwin and Lorraine Nubar in Nice, France. She is also an alumna of the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio.

Soprano Nathalie Paulin has established herself in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Far East as an interpretive artist of the very first rank.  Winner of the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Opera Performance, she has collaborated with internationally renowned conductors including Sir Roger Norrington, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Andrew Parrott, Michael Christie, Robert Spano, David Agler, Bernard Labadie, Graeme Jenkins, Andrew Litton, Antony Walker and Yoav Talmi on both the concert platform and in opera. As well, critics have been lavish in their praise: The New York Times’ Steve Smith noted that Paulin “sang with rich tone and compelling emotion”, while Renaud Machart of Le Monde praised her “impeccable diction, musicality and style.” She was featured by L’Opéra de Montréal in both the title role in PÉLLÉAS ET MÉLISANDE and as Norina in DON PASQUALE, as Handel’s SEMELE for Chicago Opera Theater, Arizona Opera and Pacific Opera Victoria and Massenet’s MANON for Calgary Opera, Opéra de Québec and Opera Lyra Ottawa including a CBC broadcast.  She has also been heard as Pamina in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE for Vancouver Opera, Antonia in LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN and Susanna in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO for Cincinnati Opera, and Micaëla in CARMEN for L’Opéra de Québec and Calgary Opera. Other recent engagements included her debut with the Rotterdam Philharmonic in L’ENFANT PRODIGUE with Yannick Nézet-Séguin, LES INDES GALANTES for Boston Baroque and ARMIDE for Opera Lafayette in Washington D.C. and New York, the role of Susanna in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO for Hamilton Opera, the title role in RODELINDA for Pacific Opera Victoria, MESSIAH with the Portland Symphony, the Lanaudiere Festival (DER VAMPYR), Toronto Summer Music with Michael McMahon and the Nash Ensemble and a Ukrainian art song recording project.

Ms. Paulin’s 2011-2012 season includes her debut for the Wexford Festival as la Baronne in LA COUR DE CELIMENE, the title role in RODELINDA for Mercury Baroque of Houston, MESSIAH with the Seattle Symphony, Iole in Handel’s HERCULES for Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Hetu’s CLARTES DE LA NUIT with Zukerman and the National Arts Centre Orchestra, MATTHÄUS PASSION conducted by Ivars Taurins for the Calgary Philharmonic, Marzelline in FIDELIO for Edmonton Opera and CARMINA BURANA with Orchestre symphonique de Québec and Orchestre symphonique de Trois Rivieres conducted by Jacques Lacombe.
