All undergraduate students in the Faculty of Music must take the two-and-a-half-year core curriculum in Music Theory. The first two years are devoted to the development of musical skills (sight singing and ear training) in conjunction with analysis and part-writing in the styles of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The third year focuses on music of the twentieth century.
The division also offers several advanced elective courses to meet the interests and needs of our students in Composition, Music Education, Music History, and Performance. Students can major in Music History and Theory. This major is intentionally designed with considerable flexibility to accommodate the individual interests of our students. A student can elect to follow a rigorous program in either Music History or Theory, or design a general major drawing from both areas. Another option is to combine this major with a minor in Composition.
