  • The MusM in Piano Pedagogy at the University of Toronto is an innovative program, which combines the strengths of the piano performance department, the music education research area, and the new pedagogy seminar and teaching practicum offerings.

    To prepare for an active, and rewarding career in the field of piano performance and pedagogy we encourage development in the following areas: the

    • highest artistic performance standards;
    • expertise in teaching at varying levels ranging from beginners to advanced university level students, in group classes, masterclasses and private tutorials;
    • proficiency in thoughtful and original research.

    Our mission is to provide individualized guidance for graduate students interested in pursuing a career in this multi-faceted field. This program is directed by Associate Professor, Midori Koga (DMA in piano performance and pedagogy, University of Michigan ).

    Degrees Offered

    undefined The Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Performance is in the approval process at the University of Toronto and at the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies. Confirmation of the DMA is "pending approvals" by these governance bodies.

    Special courses available to piano pedagogy students include:

    Piano Pedagogy: Beginning and Intermediate Levels

    Techniques and methods pertaining to beginning and intermediate level teaching. Specific emphasis will be on the study of early childhood musicianship development curricula such as Orff, Dalcroze and the Music Learning Theory of Edwin Gordon, and their application to piano study. Other topics will include technique, repertoire, stylistic interpretation, and business aspects of teaching. Individualized year-long research projects relating to beginning and intermediate teaching will offer each student an opportunity to explore specific areas of interest in greater depth.

    Practicum: Beginning and Intermediate Levels

    This practical course offers piano teaching experience through observation, and teaching in group classes and private lessons, in the Children’s Piano Pedagogy Program. All teaching scenarios will be supervised and critiqued by the instructor through videotapes and on-site observations.

    Piano Pedagogy: Advanced and University Levels

    Techniques and methods relating to advanced- and university-level teaching. Topics will include: a survey of historical technique treatises, advanced repertoire, developing diagnostic skills, master-class teaching, career development and job interview techniques, and preparation and presentation of workshops. Individualized research projects relating to advanced and university teaching will be a focal point throughout the year.

    Practicum: Advanced and University Levels

    This practical course offers piano teaching experience through observation, and hands-on private lessons with the advanced students of the Adult Community Program. All teaching scenarios will be supervised and critiqued by the instructor through videotapes and on-site observations.


    Teaching Practicum Programs

    Mus. M. in Performance (pedagogy) students have the opportunity to gain teaching experience in both programs listed below:

    Children’s Piano Pedagogy Program : Beginning/Elementary level program for children in group classes and private lessons.

    Adult Community Program : Adult students ranging from intermediate to advanced RCM Gr. X and ARCT levels. Private lessons and group masterclasses.
