Vocal & Instrumental Ensembles

The courses MUS120Y1 and MUS220Y1 – Vocal and Instrumental Ensembles I and II are open to all qualified Arts & Science students.

Students rehearse and perform in concerts and reading sessions as assigned by the Faculty of Music. This course opportunity provides experience in choral groups, orchestra, concert bands or large wind groups of diverse instrumentation. There is focus on the development of musicianship skills through performance of large ensemble works; emphasis on sight-reading, ear-training, and musical knowledge. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory.

Ensemble Rehearsal Schedule for 2011/2012:

  • University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra - Mondays and Wednesdays, 3-6pm
  • University of Toronto Wind Ensemble - Mondays and Wednesdays, 3-6pm
  • University of Toronto Wind Symphony - Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3-6pm
  • University of Toronto MacMillan Singers - Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3-5pm
  • University of Toronto Women’s Chorus - Mondays and Wednesdays, 3-5pm
  • University of Toronto Men's Chorus - Mondays and Wednesdays, 3-5pm
  • University of Toronto Women's Chamber Choir - Mondays and Wednesdays, 3-5pm
  • Guitar Orchestra - Wednesdays and Fridays, 3-6pm
  • Vocal Jazz Ensemble - Mondays and Wednesdays, 11am-1pm

A placement audition and permission of the Department are required. You are only eligible to be enrolled in one major ensemble in a given academic year.

How to apply

You must:

  • Complete and return the Mus120/220 Audition Request Form (Word or PDF) by Friday, August 19, 2011, 4:00pm. You will be notified of your audition time AFTER the Audition Form due date.
  • Obtain the relevant excerpt for your audition here.
  • A list of successful applicants will be posted on the Friday following the day auditions are held. If you are successful, you are then required to pick up a permission form from the Faculty of Music Registrar's Office (Room 145) and take it to your own College Registrar's Office in order that you be enrolled in MUS 120 or 220 by your own department.

Ensemble Placement Auditions

All students are required to successfully perform a placement audition in early September to determine their ensemble placement. Auditions dates will be determined in the Spring of 2011. 

Auditions for Arts & Science students will take place on Wednesday, September 7, 2011, 4:00-10:00pm.
