Audition Requirements - Classical
Instrument

Accordion/ Guitar /Lute

  • A 20th Century work
  • 3 other pieces from different stylistic periods (Renaissance/Baroque/Classical/Romantic)

Memorization of pieces is expected protocol for Faculty of Music guitar applicants; one piece of the applicant's choosing may be may be performed with music but the remaining pieces must be played from memory.

Brass & Woodwinds

  • 2 Contrasting movements of a sonata or concerto
  • 1 etude demonstrating your highest level of technical development
  • A 20th Century work

You may be asked to play scales and arpeggios with different articulations.

 

Double Bass

Applicants should prepare 2 contrasting movements, a study and scales and arpeggios as indicated below:

  • 1 movement from a concerto
  • 1 movement from a sonata
  • A study from Simandl (30 Etudes) or Bille (ER 263 or 304)
  • 2 octaves of all scales and arpeggios

Harp

  • 2 contrasting movements from a Baroque or Classical sonata
  • A French composition
  • A 20th Century work

Harpsichord

Memorization is required for the Performance Program.

  • A Prelude & Fugue by J.S. Bach
  • 3 contrasting movements from a Partita or English Suite
  • 3 contrasting movements from a work of the French School

Organ

  • A work by J.S. Bach
  • A pre-Bach work
  • A 20th Century work
  • if program is less than 20 minutes, 1 other contrasting work

Percussion

Minimum of  3 pieces:

  • A standard timpani etude
  • 1 or 2 snare drum solos displaying rudimentary & orchestral techniques
  • 1 or 2 mallet solos demonstrating 2 and/or 4 mallet techniques

Piano

Applicants to the Performance program perform repertoire at the RCM ARCT level; all pieces must be memorized. 

  • A Prelude & Fugue or two movements of a Suite by J.S. Bach or a toccata.
  • Two contrasting movements of a Classical sonata, one of which is in sonata form
  • A composition of the Romantic period
  • A 20th Century work (Debussy & Ravel are acceptable)
  • an etude (Fast Tempo)

Applicants to the Common First Year (includes Composition, Comprehensive and History & Theory), Music Education and CTEP  perform repertoire at the RCM Grade 9 level or above; at least 2 pieces must be memorized. 

  • A Prelude & Fugue or two movements of a Suite by J.S. Bach;  a 3-Part Invention may be substituted
  • Two contrasting movements of a Classical sonata, one of which is in sonata form
  • A composition of the Romantic period
  • A 20th Century work (Debussy & Ravel are acceptable)

As an applicant, if you are applying to two programs, one of which is Performance, your repertoire must be at the ARCT level. 

 

Violin, Viola & Cello

Applicants should prepare 4 contrasting movements/short pieces.  Each of the following periods listed below must be represented:  (memorization required for at least 2 pieces)

  • Baroque
  • Classical
  • Romantic
  • A work written after 1960, preferably Canadian. (You may wish to visit the Canadian Music Centre web site for ideas.(www.musiccentre.cahttp://www.musiccentre.ca/ - opens in new window)

Voice

Applicants for the Performance program must perform 6 pieces, representing at least three languages. 

  • An Italian song or Italian aria from before 1750
  • An aria from an opera or oratorio  
  • Songs in English and 2 other languages  
  • A 20th Century song (songs from musicals are unacceptable)

Applicants for the Common First Year (includes Composition, Comprehensive and History & Theory), Music Education or the CTEP program must perform 5 pieces representing at least two languages.

  • An Italian song or Italian aria from before 1750
  • An aria from an opera or oratorio or a folk song
  • Songs in English and 1 other language
  • A 20th Century song (songs from musicals are unacceptable)

All repertoire should be memorized.
