In this paper, I present a dialectical analysis of music education. In a quest to improve music teaching and learning, music educators tend to sidestep the internal, ontological contradictions present in pedagogical approaches and replace them with oppositional, external antinomies. In order to extract our thinking from structural cycles and serve the students present in our classrooms, we must reconcile ourselves with contradiction.
